A Good Practice Handbook to learn more from the expe­ri­ences on the ground

The social part­ners of the EU Social Dialogue Committee in the Audiovisual sec­tor — com­mer­cial and pub­lic broad­cast­ers, pro­duc­ers, and trade unions rep­re­sent­ing jour­nal­ists, cast and crew, and oth­er audio­vi­su­al pro­fes­sion­als – have been coop­er­at­ing to pro­mote gen­der equal­i­ty in film, radio and tele­vi­sion for many years already.

After the adop­tion of a Framework of Actions in 2011, the social part­ners launched a joint map­ping exer­cise to col­lect infor­ma­tion on the state-​of-​play and to iden­ti­fy the actions still need­ed to keep push­ing for gen­der equal­i­ty and diver­si­ty in the European Audiovisual sec­tor.

Dominican Republic | National union training workshop

FIM workshop | Santo Domingo

Dominican musi­cians are busy cre­at­ing a union which, in its rules, embod­ies good gov­er­nance, trans­paren­cy and gen­der equal­i­ty.

FIM is pro­vid­ing tech­ni­cal sup­port for this process through back­ing from Swedish unions Union To Union and SMF. In par­tic­u­lar, this sup­port has tak­en the form of a union train­ing work­shop, organ­ised in Santo Domingo from 15 to 17 October 2019, run by Benoît Machuel (FIM General Secretary), Nathaly Ossa (FIM region­al coor­di­na­tor for Latin America) and John Acosta (President of AFM local 47).

Ivory Coast | SAMCI rounds off its training cycle

FIM and the Musicians’ Union of the Ivory Coast (SAMCI) organ­ised a third nation­al work­shop in Abidjan from 17 to 20 June 2019, with­in the scope of a 3‑year union train­ing cycle backed by Union to Union. Opened and closed by “diva” Aicha Koné, the work­shop was divid­ed up into three parts:
1. Internal organ­i­sa­tion;
2. Intellectual prop­er­ty rights and col­lec­tive man­age­ment;
3. Gender equal­i­ty, in part­ner­ship with LeadAfricaines, a spe­cial­ized Abidjan-​based NGO.

SAMCI has made sev­er­al changes over the past year.

Senegal | AMS engaged in structuring the music sector

For the third year run­ning, FIM and AMS organ­ised a skills empow­er­ment work­shop, from 26 to 29 March 2019 in Dakar, with­in the scope of the train­ing pro­gramme backed by Swedish con­fed­er­a­tion Union to Union.

Representatives from FIM and SNAM (France) played the role of facil­i­ta­tors. After three days of group work­shops, a meet­ing with ACTRAV and UNESCO was held on the morn­ing of the 29th to study the pos­si­bil­i­ty of being sup­port­ed in col­lec­tive agree­ments. Finally, a meet­ing took place with the General Secretary of the Confédération Syndicale Autonome du Sénégal (CSA) with a view to future coop­er­a­tion with AMS.

Bogota | FIM Latin America Regional Workshop

Uruguay | FIM regional workshop on gender equality

On 30th October – 1st November 2018, FIM held a region­al work­shop on gen­der equal­i­ty in Montevideo in the frame­work of a project fund­ed by Swedish organ­i­sa­tion Union To Union, with sup­port from the Swedish Musicians’ Union SMF. The event brought togeth­er rep­re­sen­ta­tives from Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico and Uruguay. The local group, organ­ised by José Luis Azaretto of FUDEM and Gisselle Fernández of AUDEM, con­sist­ed of enthu­si­as­tic lead­ers drawn from the cap­i­tal and dif­fer­ent parts of the coun­try.

Ivory Coast | SAMCI continues structuring

FIM-SAMCI workshop, July 2018

FIM and the Musicians’ Union of the Ivory Coast (SAMCI) organ­ised a nation­al train­ing work­shop in Abidjan, from 16 – 19 July 2018, as part of its region­al train­ing pro­gramme backed by Union to Union. The work­shop ben­e­fit­ted from a part­ner­ship with region­al organ­i­sa­tion Arterial Network, whose head­quar­ters are in Abidjan.

The work­shop focused on two issues:
1. the union’s inter­nal organ­i­sa­tion;
2. gen­der equal­i­ty.

Since July 2017, SAMCI has been offi­cial­ly rec­og­nized as a pro­fes­sion­al union, has become a FIM mem­ber and held empow­er­ment meet­ings for var­i­ous com­mu­ni­ties of musi­cians, main­ly in the Abidjan region.

Costa Rica | FIM-​UTM National Workshop

On 10 – 12 July 2018, FIM held a nation­al work­shop in San José, Costa Rica, spon­sored by Union To Union and backed by SMF. The event sought to sup­port the Costa Rican trade union of music work­ers (UTM) on cur­rent pri­or­i­ty areas such as
– The imple­men­ta­tion at nation­al lev­el of UNESCO’s Recommendation con­cern­ing the sta­tus of the artist;
– The pro­mo­tion of gen­der equal­i­ty in the music sec­tor;
– The right to col­lec­tive bar­gain­ing /​to strike /​to health and safe­ty;
– The recog­ni­tion of free­lance musi­cians as work­ers;
– The mon­eti­sa­tion of works and per­for­mances in the dig­i­tal envi­ron­ment, and
– Copyright and relat­ed rights in inter­na­tion­al treaties /​in nation­al law.
