On May 8th, 2020, the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) appointed by consensus Mr Daren Tang as the Organisation’s next Director-General, with Mr Tang’s six-year term beginning on October 1st, 2020.
He will succeed Mr Francis Gurry, who has served as Director-General since October 1st, 2008.
Mr Tang currently is the Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). He has also served as Chair of the WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) for the past two and a half years.
Mr Tang said: “I look forward to working with the Member States and staff of WIPO, as well as the many stakeholders in the global IP community, to build our future IP ecosystem – one that is balanced, inclusive and vibrant.”
We hope that this welcome proximity to our sector will allow WIPO to move towards solutions that meet the expectations and needs of professional musicians
A fine expert in the musical world and a musician himself, Mr Tang had several opportunities to express his interest in the situation of performers in the face of the development of the online music market. We hope that this welcome proximity to our sector will allow WIPO to move towards solutions that meet the expectations and needs of professional musicians, with regard, in particular, to the sharing of revenues generated by streaming services.
FIM congratulates Mr Tang on his new appointment and wishes him every success as Director-General of WIPO.
