The national capacity empowering workshop organised by FIM with the backing of LO-TCO (16−18 September 2014) provided the backdrop for the SIMCCAP union to show its drive. Deborah Cheyne (FIM Vice-President and President of Brazilian union SINDMUSI) and Gabriela Supelano Londoño (regional group coordinator) accompanied the FIM General Secretary.
FIM’s previous regional project in Latin America (2006−2007) highlighted social dialogue, good governance and financial transparency. Eight years later, SIMCCAP is displaying exemplary results on all these scores. Under the leadership of its president Enrique Cabrera, this success enables it to engage on a new worksite dedicated to the following priorities:
— seeking to establish enhanced gender equality, both at union level and that of improving women’s status, their role and image as artists and union members;
— developing union communication tools, with regard to members (in order to guarantee their access to information and improve participation in the organisation’s democratic life) and with regard to the public (lobbying and enhancing the union’s role);
— heightening knowledge in the fields of copyright, related rights and collective management.
The Lima workshop received numerous institutional visitors – in particular, Congressman Mr Yonhy Lescano Ancieta. It also provided an opportunity to celebrate Peruvian music during a concert featuring singer Miryam Quiñones who, in particular, paid tribute to songwriter-composer-performer “Kiri” Escobar, also a SIMCCAP member.
